Evergreen trees. Trunk single, to 20 m tall, 30 cm in diam., swollen at base.
Leaves palmately ovate-rounded to reniform 1.5-1.8 m long, 1.2-1.8 m across, divided 2/3 their length into segments which are again divided almost to base into finely pointed, pendulous lobes 24 cm long; segments 42-74, narrowly lanceolate, veins conspicuous, induplicate, glabrous, 60 cm long, lobes 3.2-4 cm wide; hastula (ligule) 1.7 cm long, 3 cm wide; petiole 1.3-2 m long, 3.5-7 cm across, pale green, spines 46, recurved, yellowish orange tomentose from middle to base; sheaths brown, net-like.
Inflorescences 1.3-1.7 m long, 0.8 m across, bracts (spathes) 7, green at flowering, smooth, gray, brown by fruiting, pendulous, bright creamy yellow; flowers bisexual, white to yellowish green; sepals 3, green, connate, broadly ovate, imbricate, 0.5 mm long, 0.5 mm wide; petals 3, 2 mm long 1.5 mm wide, ovate; stamens 6, connate, 0.6 mm long; filaments enlarged, flattened from middle to base, free and filiform upward; anthers yellow, 0.25 mm long; pistil 1.8 mm long, 1 mm wide; ovary obconic; carpels 3, free, green apically, yellow at middle, white at base; style 1, white; ovule 1 in each cell.
Fruit ovoid to subglobose, 1.5-1.7 cm long, 1.3-1.5 cm in diam., 1.1-1.3 cm thick, violet; seed 1, gray to grayish brown 1-1.5 cm long, 1-1.2 cm in diam., 0.9-1 cm thick.
<i>Livistona chinensis</i> var. <i>chinensis</i> is similar to var. subglobosa but differs from it by having larger, ellipsoid fruit 2.5 cm long, 2.3 cm in diam.
